Joe grew up in Idaho, active in all things outdoors. He got his Eagle Scout at age 14.
He spent 2 summers after graduation working in Alaska at a self-guided fishing lodge, Doc Warners Alaskan Fishing Adventures. There, he discovered his love for teaching outdoor skills and watching others succeed.
Joe also learned to trap and tan hides and was involved in Mountain Man groups.
After getting married, he traveled the Midwest upgrading cell towers. Ten years ago, he had a co-worker ask him to teach him how to trap and tan. He tanned 25 furs out of his truck while traveling, which he classified as a nightmare.
The next year, Joe learned of a different product and tanned 100+ hides with less effort. Since then, he has learned dozens of ways to tan from commercial products to bark tanning and brain tanning. For the last four years, Joe has gotten back into the mountain man scene. He teaches and presents hide tanning, butchery, and using/crafting out of animal byproducts with the Missouri Free Trappers and independently.
